Summer 2003
Recently, Neil Fabricant and our lawyers met with Laurence Gluck and
his lawyers. We are at the very early stages of negotiations -- just figuring
out where things stand. As soon as we have something meaningful to report,
we will report it to you.
Until now, landlords have been taking massive taxpayer investments in
Mitchell-Lama housing and converting them to private profit deals--with
a small bone thrown to the people whose homes are at stake. We are determined
that it won’t happen here.
We received an e-mail message from a tenant who lives in a Mitchell-Lama
development in Brooklyn [Middaugh Apartments]. Here is an excerpt:
”FYI. There have been new developments in our situation--we are
all being evicted at 20 Henry St. No leases, no rentals, only a full-building
eviction plan. If it can happen to us, it can happen to anyone as the
landlords and politicians eventually strip away all the City's rent regulations.
--Anita & Jim”
This is war! We are drawing a line in the sand between politicians who
are helping us -- and phonies who are getting away with gestures to appease
tenants while collecting contributions from real estate developers.
